Perfluorinated compounds
Perfluorinated compounds Perfluorinated compounds and their derivatives are man-made chemicals that have been used in a wide range of products, including garments and textiles, fabric protection, furniture, and some types of fire-fighting foam. There are three principal contaminants that may be found in contaminated food: PFOS; PFOA and PFHxS. The scientific literature on the effects of these chemicals on people is inconclusive. However, testing on animals has shown some effects at low doses. National Heath Measures Survey The National Heath Measures Survey (NHMS) 2022–24 measured 11 different types of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the blood of Australians. Piloting the Health Canada-FSANZ Shared Assessment Process
Piloting the Health Canada-FSANZ Shared Assessment Process Health Canada and Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) have been exploring regulatory harmonization and through collaboration have developed a Shared Assessment Process aiming to make the GM food approval processes of both agencies more efficient by reducing assessment time, the resources required and costs. Beginning in 2013, both agencies analysed the feasibility of implementing a collaborative arrangement regarding the pre-market assessment of GM foods. After identifying the type of collaboration that would work best within their respective regulatory frameworks (i.e., a shared assessment), Health Canada and FSANZ conducted two pilot assessments to test the functionality of the process. The…

Call for comment on use of a nutritive substance in infant formula
Call for comment on use of a nutritive substance in infant formula Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is calling for comment on an application to permit the use of a nutritive substance in infant formula products. The substance, 3-fucosyllactose (3-FL), is a type of human-identical milk oligosaccharide (HiMO) made using a genetically modified source organism. The application seeks approval to use the synthesised 3-FL in infant formula products. FSANZ has found it is chemically, structurally and functionally the same as the naturally occurring 3-FL found in human milk. 3-FL offers potential health benefits for infants including increasing beneficial gut bacteria, such as Bifidobacterium, and anti-pathogenic effects. Our safety assessment found no public health or safety concerns with the proposed use. While breastfeeding is…
